Health classes explained
The four ratings—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—what each one represents and the factors determining assignment.
Underwriters price term insurance using health rating levels. Terminology differs somewhat between carriers, but progression is standardized: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Super Preferred or Preferred Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, followed by surcharge ratings for elevated-risk situations. Applicants with smoking status occupy a secondary tier of ratings with elevated pricing.
What underwriters look at
Physical metrics (height-to-weight ratio), arterial pressure and fat levels, relations with early cardiac or malignancy problems, traffic infractions, drug records, profession and pastimes, and nicotine or smoking history. Reaching the highest classification requires favorable readings almost across the board; the next level permits minor variations; the lower levels accommodate regulated conditions such as managed high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
Your self-assessment appears as: Excellent corresponds with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your quote price reflects this level, which the insurer verifies after review. If uncertain, request pricing at two levels and weigh the quotes—let underwriting make the call. Inflating your health assessment won't reduce the eventual premium; it only reduces quote precision.
